Not many changes in nonprofit governance were discussed at SoCap, in fact, as I mentioned in a later post, nonprofits were somewhat ignored at SoCap. There were a few sessions about nonprofits, but the focus of the conference was on social business and what is needed there.

I would love to see a broader discussion next year, or better yet, before, about what changes we need to see in the nonprofit sector. I think a type of nonprofit SEC is an interesting idea. I'd also love to see changes to the IRS restrictions that make it difficult for nonprofits to raise equity capital, as well as how boards of directors operate (or don't operate) effectively. I think there are a whole host of changes that need to be made in the sector, and some of those are regulatory changes. So discussions about what those should be and how we move them through policy-making bodies would be very helpful.

What kinds of changes in nonprofit governance were discussed? Increased oversight, like a sort of nonprofit SEC? I appreciate the summary and discussion, very much. Reviewing the reflections of those who were there almost makes me feel like I was!
