Terrific interview. I really enjoyed the final question about the rise of social enterprise. Penda Health (a social enterprise) is looking to provide high-quality healthcare to low-income women in Kenya and it looks like we are going to be able to make money doing it! Investors are coming in and it's tremendously easier to attract investors for this venture that it was to attract donors to non-profit causes I have worked on in the past. Its an interesting dilemma and I am thrilled to see the discussion continuing.

I like what he says about rewarding businesses who alleviate the need for the "fixes" that non profits provide. An investment advisor once advised me "forget about socially conscious investing" and to invest in petroleum companies and other high-return investments, then give some of my proceeds to non profits. In reply I sputtered "But non profits EXIST to solve the problems created by unethical corporations who pollute our earth and exploit their workers!" How backwards to reward the folks causing the problems, and then defund the groups working to solve those problems!
