You want to keep up, but how can you when the number of sites grows every day? And each site competes with the others on look, functionality, audience size. I&#8217;ve finally decided to take the advice of many and focus my time on a select few sites. These are:</p>

<p>At first I was hesitant about Google+. Even though Google+ can&#8217;t boast anywhere close to the number of people that LinkedIn and Facebook do, it is still very much on my list. Google increasingly controls how people find content on the web, and it is more than likely that the search engine will increasingly reward those who use it (your content will rank higher in searches if you are using Google+).</p>
<p>But in addition to that, I&#8217;m pretty excited about Google Hangouts, Google&#8217;s answer to online meetings. I participated in my first Google Hangout in April with David Henderson (<a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cq7je3cnf5hglrg33021ghaev4s" target="_blank">How to Use Real Performance Data to Raise More Money</a>), and now I&#8217;m using Google Hangouts with small groups of nonprofit leaders in the <a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/tools/store/fnf-e-course-for-nonprofit-leaders/" target="_blank">Financing Not Fundraising E-Course</a>. I also have client meetings via Google Hangout. But I think there is huge potential for even more with Google Hangouts.</p>
<p>To host all of this new activity I&#8217;ve launched a <a href="https://plus.google.com/b/111466703964531615543/111466703964531615543/posts" target="_blank">Social Velocity Google+ page</a>. I plan to host some informal social innovation chats and perhaps move some of my <a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/blog/interview-series/" target="_blank">monthly social innovator interviews</a> from written exchanges to live or recorded Google Hangouts. So, on the Social Velocity Google+ page in addition to updates, articles and other happenings in the world of social innovation you can participate in upcoming Hangouts and interact with leaders in the social innovation space. From crowdfunding, to a new giving graph, to credit card donations to the homeless, to engaging people in the arts and beyond, people are experimenting with technology for social change in really exciting ways.</p>

<li>Crowdfunding is quickly becoming the hot new thing in the social change world. It remains to be seen if it is a game changer, but in the meantime take a look at some examples of how its being used <a href="http://www.growthology.org/growthology/2013/03/lessons-for-entrepreneurs-from-crowdfunding.html" target="_blank">here</a>, <a href="http://dowser.org/clean-energy-is-crowdfunding-the-solution/" target="_blank">here</a>, and <a href="http://pndblog.typepad.com/pndblog/2013/03/welcome-to-the-new-world-of-fundraising.html" target="_blank">here.</a> And while we&#8217;re talking about innovative use of technology to fundraise, Lucy Bernholz <a href="http://philanthropy.blogspot.com/2013/03/donating-to-homeless-with-credit-card.html" target="_blank">dissects</a> some new efforts to donate to the homeless via a credit card.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Writing on the ArtsFwd blog, Anna Prushinskaya describes how some innovative arts organizations have <a href="http://artsfwd.org/tailoring-online-media-platforms/" target="_blank">used social media to effectively engage audiences</a> in new ways.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>I&#8217;m really excited about a <a href="http://casefoundation.org/blog/how-new-type-social-graph-could-change-philanthropy" target="_blank">new technology the Case Foundation is developing</a> that will map your online search preferences to giving suggestions just like Google, Facebook and others currently use your search preferences to suggest products and services. (I&#8217;ll be <a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/consulting/social-velocity-interview-series/" target="_blank">interviewing</a> the mastermind behind this, Will Grana, on the blog this summer).</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>I love to see nonprofits using new media (like video and infographics) to tell their story. Beth Kanter <a href="http://www.bethkanter.org/no-sweat-infographics/" target="_blank">offers</a> some easy tips for creating infographics. And speaking of cool infographics, check out <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/176625616608535265/" target="_blank">this one</a> on why slacktivists are more active than you think.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>It seems &#8220;scale,&#8221; the social innovation buzzword of a few years back, is being redefined. Kathleen Enright, CEO of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations, <a href="http://pndblog.typepad.com/pndblog/2013/03/expanding-our-view-of-pathways-to-grow-impact.html" target="_blank">describes</a> a new report that expands the idea of scale and offers ways grantmakers can support it.  And Ben Mangan, CEO of nonprofit EARN, <a href="http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/the_ugly_truth_about_scale" target="_blank">spurs</a> nonprofits and funders to move past &#8220;stifling incrementalism&#8221; and start working towards real scale.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Dan Pallotta ruffled some feathers, as is his way, with his TED Talk this month <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_pallotta_the_way_we_think_about_charity_is_dead_wrong.html" target="_blank">The Way We Think About Charity is Dead Wrong</a>, and there were several responses. But I thought the most thought-provoking was from a group of professors from Boston who <a href="http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/persistent_poverty_in_a_smug_meritocracy" target="_blank">suggest</a> that Pallotta&#8217;s argument that nonprofit salaries are too low only reinforces the wealth inequality of the American economy.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>And on a related note, Dione Alexander, writing on the Mission and Money blog, <a href="http://philanthropy.com/blogs/money-and-mission/inequitable-salaries-at-nonprofits-are-a-kind-of-bullying/28125" target="_blank">explains</a> increasing wealth inequality as a kind of bullying, noting &#8220;The social contract through which we assume shared responsibility for the community is broken.&#8221;</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>And since we are on the topic, this <a href="http://mashable.com/2013/03/02/wealth-inequality/" target="_blank">video about wealth inequality in America</a> blew my mind. If you want a quick and dirty view of where America&#8217;s money goes, take a look.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>As part of the ten year anniversary of the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Matthew Forti <a href="http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/ten_years_of_performance_measurement" target="_blank">looks back</a> at the past ten years of measuring nonprofit outcomes, the good, bad and the ugly.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Writing in the Duke Chronicle, Trinity senior Elena Botella <a href="http://www.dukechronicle.com/articles/2013/03/28/when-public-sector-does-it-better" target="_blank">argues</a> that deciding when a public service should be privatized should be based on evidence, as she says &#8220;Humans respond to a profit motive, but we also respond to altruism, community values, prestige and pride in our work.&#8221;</li>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/2013/01/a-case-study-in-getting-nonprofit-fundraising-right/stsolarcistern/" rel="attachment wp-att-7016"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-7016" alt="STsolarcistern" src="http://www.socialvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/STsolarcistern.jpg" width="235" height="314" /></a>I&#8217;ve <a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/2011/05/when-fundraising-goes-wrong-really-wrong/" target="_blank">written before</a> about when nonprofit fundraising goes really wrong. An organization that I donated to a few times refused to leave me alone after 11 years of ignored solicitations. Today I want to flip it and talk about a nonprofit that has done a great job at fundraising. (In some ways they mirror <a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/2011/05/when-fundraising-goes-right-really-right/" target="_blank">my earlier post</a> about when fundraising goes really right.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.foundcom.org/" target="_blank">Foundation Communities</a> is a nonprofit in Austin, Texas that provides affordable housing and support services to low income families and individuals. About 4 years ago a friend invited me to a lunch at a Foundation Communities housing complex. It was NOT the traditional nonprofit gala luncheon.</p>
<p>Instead, when we walked into the common area of the housing complex there were box lunches waiting for us. The executive director and a couple of board members gave us a 5-minute description of what Foundation Communities is and does and why they are passionate about it. Then we watched a 10-minute video of the program in action and interviews with their some of their clients.</p>
<p>Finally our group was split into smaller groups led by a board member to tour the complex. On the tour, the board member explained how Foundation Communities uses an innovative financing model to acquire ineffective housing, renovate it and make it livable and affordable, while providing much needed after-school care, financial services and other help to the residents there.</p>
<p>At the end of the presentations and the tour we were asked to fill out a brief card with our name, contact info, and if/how we&#8217;d like to get involved with Foundation Communities (volunteer, take another tour, meet with a staff member). We were also asked if we could recommend a friend who might like to come to a future lunch. Foundation Communities holds these <a href="http://www.foundcom.org/get-involved/join-us-for-lunch/" target="_blank">informal lunches every month</a>. With that, the hour was up and we were on our way.</p>
<p>After that interesting and compelling introduction to the organization I started giving an annual gift. They were always very prompt with both an email thank you (since I made my donation online) and a paper thank you explaining how my gift would be used and all of the great work Foundation Communities is doing. Every once in awhile I would get an email about another specific campaign for which they needed my help. For example, right before school started one year they asked me to contribute the cost of a back pack and supplies for one of the children in their program. I found the email timely and compelling, so I complied.</p>
<p>When I gave my annual contribution again this year at Christmastime, I received a very nice voice mail from their Development Director thanking me for the gift and inviting me to call her back if I wanted to learn more about the program or had questions. I also received my usual email and paper thank yous, but this time with a special handwritten note from the executive director on the paper thank you.</p>
<p>I continue to give year after year to Foundation Communities because I am impressed by the organization, the results they are achieving, and the organization&#8217;s leadership. But I also continue to give because I appreciate how they treat me as a donor. They are informative, gracious, timely, transparent, but not annoying or needy.</p>
<p>Obviously Foundation Communities is way ahead of the curve, but I think they could take it further and gain even more support in the process:</p>
<ul>
<li>Instead of assuming that I want their paper newsletter every month (which I do not), they could ask me via email, phone or letter how and when to best communicate their results with me (email, phone call, social media, etc).</li>
<li>Because I have a giving history with the organization, they could attempt (via email, phone, social media) to get to know me and my interests in order to 1) understand how to find more donors like me and 2) to explore whether they can increase my giving level.</li>
<li>Since I have given to them over time, and I am active with social media they might explore whether I would be willing to tap into my networks to find others interested in supporting their organization.</li>
</ul>
<p>Foundation Communities is doing a lot of things right. Other nonprofits could learn from their example about how to consistently and effectively build a donor base. But I&#8217;d also love to see Foundation Communities build on their great work to secure even more support.</p>

<li>First we took a look back. Lucy Bernholz, queen of social sector predictions, <a href="http://philanthropy.blogspot.fr/2012/12/scoring-my-own-predictions.html" target="_blank">reviews</a> the ten year predictions that she made in 2010 to see how she&#8217;s doing so far. PhilanTopic offers <a href="http://pndblog.typepad.com/pndblog/2012/12/infographic-it-was-a-very-good-year-for-social-giving.html" target="_blank">an infographic</a> that demonstrates how effective online and social media fundraising was in 2012.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Then we look ahead. Writing on the Nonprofit Quarterly blog, Rick Cohen provides <a href="http://www.nonprofitquarterly.org/management/21540-ch-ch-changes-nonprofit-sector-predictions-for-2013.html" target="_blank">a wrap up</a> of various social sector leaders&#8217; predictions for how the nonprofit sector will change in the coming year. And Twitter’s Manager For Social Innovation describes how <a href="http://www.fastcoexist.com/1681066/twitters-manager-for-social-innovation-on-how-social-is-shaping-the-future-of-nonprofits" target="_blank">social media is shaping the future of nonprofits</a>. And on the Stanford Social Innovation Review blog Mark Tobias offers nonprofits <a href="http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/ten_technology_trends_to_watch_in_2013" target="_blank">Ten Technology Trends to Watch in 2013</a>.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Amidst the season of giving, Caroline Fiennes and Phil Buchanan <a href="http://www.freakonomics.com/2012/12/06/charitable-giving-why-fewer-is-more/" target="_blank">explain</a> (on the Freakeconomics blog) why giving to fewer charities is actually better.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>In a very interesting thought piece Kenneth Rogoff, economics professor at Harvard, <a href="http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/technological-stagnation-and-advanced-countries--slow-growth-by-kenneth-rogoff" target="_blank">takes issue</a> with those who argue that our current economic troubles stem from a long-term innovation crisis.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Building on a growing movement to get the nonprofit sector to stand up for itself, Johns Hopkins University released the <a href="http://ccss.jhu.edu/publications-findings?did=389" target="_blank">results</a> of a nonprofit sector survey that found a widespread consensus that seven values lie at the core of the nonprofit sector. But they also found that nonprofit leaders believe the sector must better articulate these values to the media, government, and general public.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>In his usual fashion, Seth Godin likes to pronounce on the nonprofit sector, a sector which he doesn&#8217;t quite understand. His post <a href="http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2012/11/non-profits-more-innovative.html" target="_blank">Non-profits Have a Charter to be Innovators</a> drew some fire, but raised some interesting questions. And echoing that interest in seeing more nonprofit innovation, Google <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/google-grants-part-of-larger-growth-in-venture-philanthropy-for-nonprofit-innovators-in-us/2012/12/27/5da48c3e-5018-11e2-835b-02f92c0daa43_story_1.html" target="_blank">shifts their philanthropic focus in an interesting way.  </a></li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>And not to be left behind, philanthropy is getting into the innovation game too with more foundations <a href="http://pndblog.typepad.com/pndblog/2012/12/the-role-of-design-and-design-thinking-in-philanthropy.html" target="_blank">exploring design thinking</a>.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>After the horror of the Newtown tragedy on December 14th, this <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/moments-that-restored-our-faith-in-humanity-this-y" target="_blank">collection of 26 photos from 2012</a> helped restore our faith in humanity and was a much needed salve.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>The Red Cross provided <a href="http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/33916/How-the-Red-Cross-is-Using-Inbound-Marketing-to-Drive-Donations-This-Holiday-Season.aspx" target="_blank">a great case study</a> on how pull (instead of push) marketing can work in the nonprofit world.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Something really interesting came out of hurricane Sandy: <a href="http://www.npr.org/2012/12/10/166742312/everyone-chip-in-please-crowdfunding-sandy?ft=1&amp;f=1001" target="_blank">crowdfunding disaster relief</a>. No longer is disaster response the sole responsibility of government and large nonprofits, individuals set up their own relief efforts via social media.</li>

And at the same time we had some pretty interesting arguments for how two of the sectors supporting social change (philanthropy and government) needed to shift as well.  All made for a fascinating month of reading.</p>

<li title="http://sco.lt/4huJJx" dir="ltr" data-expanded-url="http://sco.lt/4huJJx">Even though hurricane Sandy hit at the end of October, much of November was spent cleaning up and reacting to the powerful storm. Patrick Davis <a href="http://www.unsectored.net/reflecting-on-sandy/" target="_blank">reflects</a> on what our reaction in natural disasters says about human nature.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>And from Sandy we moved into the national election where, once it was over, there was much to learn. First Lucy Bernholz marvels at Nate Silver (the statistician that very accurately predicted the outcome of the election) and wonders what the corollary is in the philanthropic world. She <a href="http://philanthropy.blogspot.com/2012/11/predictive-analytics-and-philanthropy.html" target="_blank">asks</a> &#8220;Who will be the first big philanthropist to put predictive analysis to the test in the social sector?&#8221; And apparently there is much to be learned from the <a href="http://blog.kissmetrics.com/email-marketing-lessons-obama/" target="_blank">Obama campaign&#8217;s email tactics</a> during the campaign.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>November also saw the launch of &#8220;Giving Tuesday,&#8221; an online effort to kick off the philanthropic season, just as Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the beginning of the commercial Christmas season.  While it <a href="http://philanthropy.com/blogs/prospecting/online-donations-grew-42-last-week-thanks-to-givingtuesday" target="_blank">seems like a great, innovative idea</a>, Tim Ogden <a href="http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/the_curmudgeons_guide_to_giving_tuesday" target="_blank">disagrees</a> arguing that it won&#8217;t &#8220;materially affect giving in any positive way.&#8221;</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>It looks like it&#8217;s time to get tough with foundations. The PhilanTopic blog argues, &#8220;<a href="http://pndblog.typepad.com/pndblog/2012/11/foundations-need-to-increase-general-operating-support.html" target="_blank">No More Free Rides: Foundations Need to Increase General Operating Support Now</a>.&#8221; Amen to that! And GlassPockets, the Foundation Center&#8217;s online effort to increase foundation accountability and transparency <a href="http://blog.glasspockets.org/2012/11/matz20121129.html" target="_blank">now has 50 foundations participating</a>, representing $138 billion in assets and more than $6.5 billion in annual giving, or 15% of all U.S. foundation giving.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li title="http://sco.lt/7XfQob" dir="ltr" data-expanded-url="http://sco.lt/7XfQob">And the government has work to do as well. Former Social Innovation Fund Director Paul Carttar <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/skollworldforum/2012/11/12/why-we-arent-getting-the-full-benefit-of-social-innovation-and-what-the-government-should-do-about-it/" target="_blank">writes</a> a call to action about what government can do to more effectively encourage social innovation.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>The drum beat for nonprofits to measure outcomes continues. Writing on the Stanford Social Innovation Review blog, Mollie West and Andy Posner encourage nonprofits to go the way of business and government and start using <a href="http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/the_math_of_social_change" target="_blank">The Math of Social Change</a>.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>And there is a really interesting new development in the ongoing effort to compare and rate social change organizations. <a href="http://www.fastcoexist.com/1680917/the-social-impact-100-index-will-make-sure-you-never-donate-to-a-shady-nonprofit-again" target="_blank">The Social Impact 100 Index</a> was unveiled in November. Modeled after the S&amp;P Index in the financial markets, this effort by the Social Impact Exchange analyzes and picks the best 100 nonprofit investments for donors. It will be very interesting to see how this effort evolves and whether it transforms the nonprofit rating space.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Despite a tough economy, charitable giving <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/11/26/charitable-giving-increased-slightly/1728027/" target="_blank">rose slightly in 2011</a>. But the real news is that <a href="http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/givingback/177484241.html" target="_blank">online giving has grown to a $22 billion industry</a>.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>And speaking of fundraising in the online world, social media has <a href="http://www.ssireview.org/articles/entry/the_permanent_disruption_of_social_media" target="_blank">completely disrupted the old model for how a nonprofit engages a donor</a>, so says Julie Dixon and Denise Keyes. And Kivi Leroux Miller <a href="http://www.nonprofitmarketingguide.com/blog/2012/11/28/chucking-the-ladder-of-engagment/" target="_blank">agrees</a>.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>On the Managing the Mission Checkbook blog, Kate Barr <a href="http://www.nonprofitsassistancefund.org/blog/2012/11/28/sustainability-not-a-myth-but-not-what-you-may-think/" target="_blank">cautions</a> that nonprofit sustainability isn&#8217;t just about revenue, it&#8217;s about 1) working to achieve your mission 2) integrating a successful business model and 3) adapting and changing. Agreed!</li>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-6010" style="margin: 0px 25px 10px 0px;" title="AdinMiller" src="http://www.socialvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/AdinMiller.jpg" alt="" width="144" height="180" />In this month’s Social Velocity blog interview, we’re talking with Adin Miller. Adin is the Senior Director for Community Impact and Innovations at the <a href="http://www.jewishfed.org/" target="_blank">Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund</a>. In this role, he develops new strategies and programs to bring about change and impact within JCF’s mission. Adin focuses on defining metrics to document impact, maximizing measurable impact and increasing the visibility of the organization.</p>

<p><strong>Nell: You have always been on the funding side of social change. How do you think philanthropy must evolve in order to add to, instead of detract from, the new energy around social innovation?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Adin:</strong> I actually believe the philanthropic sector is embracing social innovation, although at a slower rate than we expected. Our modern version of philanthropy, which traces its roots back to the formation of private foundations and federated systems over 100 years ago, has had many examples of supporting innovation and taking risk. However, I believe the growth and demand for metrics, data, and measures of success and impact may have unintentionally tamped down the sector’s willingness to take risk through innovation.</p>
<p>The Bay Area community is identified with entrepreneurship and innovation. That same ethos is also evident within the nonprofit sector (for example, see The Joshua Venture’s profile of it&#8217;s <a href="http://joshuaventuregroup.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JVG-CreativeThinkersBoldVisions.pdf" target="_blank">2012 applicant pool</a> (PDF)). The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund has embraced this ethos by providing funding to support social innovation in new and established organizations. I have also advocated for a broader embracing of innovations in how we fund in order to further support new approaches.</p>
<p>By embracing the energy around social innovation, I can engage new donors in our efforts while also providing the means to support an evolving ecosystem of organizations that make up our local Jewish community. In some sense, I believe philanthropy’s resistance to the new energy around social innovation seems misplaced. Harnessing that energy can be an effective tool in a comprehensive strategic philanthropic approach.</p>
<p><strong>Nell: You are fairly passionate about connecting traditional philanthropy to the emerging world of impact investing. Why is it critical to bring the two worlds together?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Adin:</strong> I believe our current societal challenges and the continued shift by government away from social, safety net, and education services requires that philanthropy look beyond the confines of simply applying a 5% spend rate on a private foundation’s net investment assets. The general principle of impact investing encourages philanthropy to make better use of the other 95% of assets it manages. Whether structured through Mission-Related Investments, Program-Related Investments, or emerging fields such as social impact bonds, philanthropy has the opportunity to put more of its resources into action to support social change efforts and grow them in scale.</p>
<p>Community foundations and federated systems (such as my employer, the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund), in my opinion, have the greater opportunity to embrace impact investing. They directly engage individuals through donor-advised vehicles, supporting foundations, or annual fundraising appeals, and have the unique opportunity to also encourage individual social impact investing that compliments and aligns with their individual charitable giving and philanthropic behavior. The market opportunity is big and when it’s finally realized, will have a much bigger disruptive impact on how philanthropy functions and supports social change.</p>
<p><strong>Nell: In your current role at the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund part of your charge is &#8220;to define and develop metrics to document impact.&#8221; Determining social impact is such a holy grail in the social change sector. How do you go about defining and measuring impact in your work?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Adin:</strong> As an institution, the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund is looking to better understand and track its ability to affect social change. The need for and supply of data have been hallmarks of the current disruptive state of philanthropy. But, I’m also cognizant that we cannot overwhelm our grantees with outsized and overwhelming data requests. As such, we’re methodically working with our funded organizations and community donors to identify the key data points we should be collectively tracking to measure effectiveness and impact.</p>
<p>For our large-scale initiatives – such as our Reducing Barriers and Increasing Access to Participation in Jewish Life initiative – we have adopted a Collective Impact approach and the specific intention to work with partner organizations and community members to define shared goals and intended impact. We have also positioned our new grantees to set aside funding for smaller-scale efforts to assess and measure their effectiveness. I expect that my team and I will continue to work with grantees and partners to craft the right recipe to allow us to effectively measure impact while also emphasizing the impact may take years to become evident.</p>
<p><strong>Nell: You have been involved with social change both as a staff member at funding institutions and as principal of your own consulting firm. What role do you think consultants play in the social change ecosystem?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Adin:</strong> Consultants have the opportunity to bring their wider field of vision, built through multiple and diverse interactions with clients, into play. In some respect, consultants serve as ambassadors of thought and action that can bridge institutions in the social change ecosystem. When I managed my own consulting firm I had the privilege of learning about crosscutting issues and approaches that I could then bring into my interactions with clients. There is a tremendous amount of quiet coaching and mentorship that happens as a consultant and that’s the entry point by which I could advise as well as gently push clients to consider additional paths to achieve their missions and goals.</p>
<p><strong>Nell: Before moving from consulting to the JCFEF you were active with your <a href="http://www.adinmiller.com/blog/3" target="_blank">Working In White Space blog</a>, but you haven&#8217;t been as active on the blog recently. What role do you think social media plays in social change and how do you stay engaged with it from within an organization?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Adin:</strong> Oh, I very much miss my blog. Writing is undeniably a muscle that requires constant use and dedication, and my own ability to do so took a dramatic hit over the past 12 months. Nevertheless, I believe in the power of social media and blogging to share experiences, push ideas along, and test out theories. In my current work, I’ve encouraged my team to find their own voices and become engaged in social media and blogging. The opportunity to exchange ideas in public is a key element of how philanthropy professionals can further extend the effectiveness of their efforts while also raising the transparency quotient so needed in the sector.</p>
<p>On a personal level, I still try to maintain an active profile in social media (mostly Twitter &#8211; I’m <a href="https://twitter.com/adincmiller" target="_blank">@adincmiller</a> &#8211; but Google+ , LinkedIn and Facebook as well) where I push along interesting content. I follow about 80 different philanthropy, social media, and impact investing RSS feeds that give me a great window into current debates and trending issues. And I continue to coach and push for greater communication through social media platforms.</p>

We heard that foundations should be more open to risk and should engage with nonprofits to find the best solutions. And we found out some fascinating information about how Americans give. And there were some exciting developments in the newest social sector funding vehicle, the social impact bond. What a great month!</p>

<li>It looks like social impact bonds are starting to take off in America. This innovative social financing partners private investors, public bonds and nonprofit organizations to solve social problems. Goldman Sachs has gotten on board with a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/02/nyregion/goldman-to-invest-in-new-york-city-jail-program.html?_r=2" target="_blank">$10 million investment</a> in a New York City program to reduce prison recidivism rates.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Writing in the <em>New York Times</em>, Georgetown University professor Peter Edelman <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/29/opinion/sunday/why-cant-we-end-poverty-in-america.html?pagewanted=all" target="_blank">breaks down the factors</a> contributing to a 15% poverty rate in America and what needs to change to improve it.</li>

Try these on for size. Geri Stengel (guest posting on Beth Kanter&#8217;s blog) shows how the Genocide Intervention Network <a href="http://www.bethkanter.org/socialmedia-donors/" target="_blank">found major donors through social media</a>, HubSpot offers <a href="http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/33462/7-Creative-Ways-Nonprofits-Can-Use-Social-Media-to-Drive-Donations.aspx%20%E2%80%A6" target="_blank">7 Creative Ways Nonprofits Can Use Social Media to Drive Donations</a> and Kivi Leroux Miller explains <a href="http://www.nonprofitmarketingguide.com/blog/2012/08/13/how-social-media-and-fundraising-fit-together/" target="_blank">How Social Media and Fundraising Fit Together</a>.</li>

<li>Guest blogging on the PhilanTopic blog, Derrick Feldmann <a href="http://pndblog.typepad.com/pndblog/2012/08/why-risk-is-an-unloved-word-in-philanthropy.html" target="_blank">argues</a> &#8220;We need donors who are truly willing to embrace risk and invest significant dollars in potential solutions that may not yield immediate results but get us closer to our ultimate objective, even if it&#8217;s only by demonstrating what <em>doesn&#8217;t</em> work.&#8221; Amen to that! And Rodney Foxworth <a href="http://rodneyfoxworth.com/2012/08/13/can-big-philanthropy-hinder-innovation/" target="_blank">seems to agree</a>.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>On the Stanford Social Innovation Review blog Sheetal Singh <a href="http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/nonprofits_in_the_age_of_the_new_citizen" target="_blank">writes</a> that there is a new active, engaged citizen movement in America, but that nonprofits are missing the opportunity to participate. She argues that &#8220;nonprofits need to realize that the “new citizens” are no longer passive recipients of their services; they demand engagement and inclusion. If nonprofits don’t adapt to this paradigm, they will be left out of the conversation.&#8221;</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>One of my new favorite bloggers, Mark Hecker, does it again with <a href="http://www.unsectored.net/were-all-cowards/" target="_blank">a great post </a>encouraging nonprofit and government leaders to be &#8220;fearless&#8221; in setting goals that will knock social change out of the park.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><a href="http://philanthropy.com/section/How-America-Gives/621/" target="_blank">A new study</a> by the Chronicle of Philanthropy reveals how Americans give to charity. It turns out you give more if you have less or live near those who have less. But there is much more data to explore on their website. Fascinating.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Forbes uses the World Wildlife Fund of The Netherlands as a case study to demonstrate the <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/ashoka/2012/08/20/five-steps-to-growing-your-social-impact-lessons-from-the-world-wildlife-fund/" target="_blank">Five Steps to Growing Your Social Impact</a>.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li>Lucy Bernholz <a href="http://philanthropy.blogspot.com/2012/08/trying-to-solve-problems.html" target="_blank">takes issue</a> with foundation application processes and calls instead for a model &#8220;where foundations and nonprofits are working together &#8211; from idea generation through proposal, implementation and assessment &#8211; to actually solve problems.&#8221; Wow, imagine that.</li>

<li>The Gates Foundation blog demonstrates how <a href="http://www.impatientoptimists.org/Posts/2012/08/How-Libraries-Empower-Women-Strengthen-Healthcare-and-Bridge-the-Education-Gap" target="_blank">support of public libraries</a> is a critical part of transforming developing countries.</li>

It seems so obvious to me that there are a million different ways for board members to contribute to the bottom-line of their nonprofits, that it didn&#8217;t occur to me that a list like that could be so valuable. But apparently it was.</p>
<p>So I want to add to the list, to give people even more ideas for how their board can contribute to the financial engine of their nonprofit without ever asking for money. And maybe with all of these options, more nonprofits will institute a requirement that EVERY board member contribute (either with a personal gift or by implementing some of these ideas) financially to the organization.<br />
So here are 9 <strong><em>more</em></strong> ways that board members who are fundraising &#8220;shy&#8221; can raise money for their nonprofit:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Invite 5 Friends to Tour the Program</strong><br />
If you feel truly passionate about the work of the nonprofit you serve, then you should want to show your friends that work. You show off your new car, your son’s graduation photos, or your best recipes, why wouldn’t you want to show off something that is near and dear to your heart&#8211;the organization you spend many hours a year supporting and building? And if one of your friends feels the spark and wants to become involved with the nonprofit themselves then that is a new supporter you&#8217;ve found for the organization.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Talk About Your Nonprofit on Facebook</strong><br />
You talk about everything else on your Facebook page, why not dedicate a post or two to your favorite nonprofit? Share a recent blog post from the agency, or pictures of the children you work with, or an invitation to the next tour. And do the same on Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, wherever you currently hang out. If even just a few of your friends noticed and started to become involved you could be bringing new supporters to the organization.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Show Up to One of Your Nonprofit’s Events</strong><br />
Just the simple act of being present at a prospecting or donor event could have huge benefit for your nonprofit. A potential donor who sees and talks with board members from the organization is going to be much more likely to give. The board lends an enormous amount of credibility to an organization. People who witness a board member&#8217;s support in person and get to chat with them about why they serve and what they love about the organization could easily become new donors.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Tell The Story Of Why You Serve </strong><br />
If you feel really passionate about your nonprofit, capture that story. Let your nonprofit do a video interview of you, or write your story down yourself. These stories are gold to a nonprofit. They can turn your story into a YouTube video, a blog post, an e-newsletter article, a section on their website, a Facebook post and on and on. It’s a domino effect. If they can demonstrate to others the passion and commitment that exists on their board, they can translate that into more support.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Help Craft a Case for Support</strong><br />
It&#8217;s really hard for a nonprofit to raise money if they don’t have a compelling argument for why someone should give. Encourage your fellow board members and the organization staff to sit down together to <a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/tools/store/case-for-support/" target="_blank">craft a case for support</a>. The exercise of articulating why someone outside the organization should care strengthens the organization’s ability to ask for money and energizes and re-engages board and staff in the process.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Analyze Your Networks </strong><br />
Every single one of us is part of many networks. Our circle of friends, our co-workers, our neighbors, our fellow church-goers, other parents at our kids’ school. The list goes on and on. If you took 20-30 minutes to analyze all of the people you know and whether they might have an interest in your nonprofit and the capacity to give a gift, you could uncover some  prospects for your organization. But don&#8217;t worry, just because you come up with those prospect names doesn&#8217;t mean you have to ask them for money. You can give those names to the executive director or development director and ask them to pursue them as a potential lead.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Go on a Solicitation Call.  </strong><br />
I know this list is for board members who DON’T want to make the ask. But simply going on a call doesn’t mean you ever have to actually ask for money. Leave that up to the executive director or development director who go with you. When a prospect is ready for the ask, you should go in pairs, and the staff member/board member pair is ideal. The staff member can do the actual asking, and the board member can be there to voice the community’s support for and investment in the organization. And that demonstration of support and investment goes a long way to turning a prospect into a donor.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Educate a Funder About the Power of Capacity Capital</strong><br />
<a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/tools/store/ebook-capacity-capital/" target="_blank">Capacity capital</a> is the money your nonprofit so desperately needs to build a stronger, more effective organization. But because it is a new kind of money in the sector, funders need to understand why it is so important and why they should give it. If you could <a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/tools/store/ebook-capacity-capital/" target="_blank">convince just one funder</a> of the power of a capacity capital investment to transform the fundraising function of your nonprofit (to pay for a new donor database, or a Development Director for example) you could greatly increase your organization&#8217;s ability to raise money over the long-term.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Give a Gift </strong><br />
You don’t have to ask anyone for money if you actually give a gift yourself. It amazes me how many board members serve on a board but never actually write the organization a check. If you truly believe in the organization enough to volunteer your time, expertise, connections and experience, then why wouldn’t you make a financial investment as well? And that financial investment should hurt a little bit, otherwise how can you expect anyone else to make the financial sacrifices necessary to keep the organization strong?</li>
</ol>
<p>I really could go on and on. To me, there is an endless list of ways board members can contribute to the financial sustainability of the nonprofit they serve. The trick is helping them realize that. Maybe these lists will give you some ways to start that conversation with your board.</p>

Camera. Help.</a>, a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging cause-driven organizations to use film and video to tell their stories. Neff is a Senior Consultant at <a href="http://www.antseyeview.com/" target="_blank">Ant&#8217;s Eye View</a>, and the co-founder of Internet start up <a href="http://www.helpattack.com/" target="_blank">HelpAttack!</a> In 2009, he was named the American Marketing Association&#8217;s Nonprofit Social Media Marketer of the year and one of the top 20 Social Media people in the state of Texas.</p>

<p><strong>Nell: Your book, <em>The Future of Nonprofits</em>, came out almost a year ago. Has anything changed in your view of what the future holds for the nonprofit sector?</strong></p>
<p><strong>David</strong>: Not yet. I think if anything in the past year we are seeing the rise of more and more tools (<a href="http://blog.gowalla.com/" target="_blank">Gowalla</a> dying off, <a href="http://www.pinterest.com" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> interest rising) but nonprofits are still too obsessed with the tools and not the higher level tactics behind them. Much less concentrating on the objectives and goals that go above the strategy. I hope that starts to change in 2012.</p>
<p><strong>Nell: <a href="http://sxsw.com/interactive" target="_blank">SXSW Interactive</a> just wrapped up, what is on the cutting edge of technology innovation for social change? What got you really excited?</strong></p>
<p><strong>David</strong>: To be honest what got me excited was the privacy push we saw at SXSW. The rise of the informed public as to what brand and nonprofits are doing with their data, who they are sharing it with and how&#8217;s it being used. For too long I think the average nonprofit constituent has just written a check or donated online and then not worried about what&#8217;s happened with their data. Hopefully more and more nonprofits will re-think their privacy policies just as Google and Pinterest have done.</p>
<p><strong>Nell: Innovation has become quite a buzz word in the nonprofit sector lately. What does it mean to you and what makes an &#8220;innovative&#8221; nonprofit?</strong></p>
<p><strong>David</strong>: Most nonprofits think of themselves as innovative when they simply add a new program or tool to their arsenal. This is the same as when GM calls a new car &#8220;innovative&#8221; because it has a new cup holder. <a href="http://www.kony2012.com/" target="_blank">KONY2012</a> was not innovative. It was a great cause-driven film that had a clear message to 1) help spread the word about Kony 2) to drive revenue and sales of the awareness items for invisible children. Innovative nonprofits are those out there trying new ideas that go beyond advertising or new programs. When I think innovative I think of the ground breaking campaigns that Stacey Monk at <a href="http://epicchange.org/" target="_blank">Epic Change</a> is creating.</p>
<p><strong>Nell: You spent 9 years at the American Cancer Society working on their online initiatives. Often it is difficult to bring innovation and new technology to the largest nonprofits. How were you able to innovate within such an organization? And what tips do you have for other &#8220;intrapreneurs&#8221; working to bring innovations to large nonprofits?</strong></p>
<p><strong>David</strong>: Luckily the American Cancer Society had an innovation system in place. One that helped foster new ideas, kill bad ones, and re-direct mediocre ones. We called this the Future and Innovation Center and I was lucky enough to twice receive a grant to create and build new ideas out of this center. Randal Moss (my co-author) was at the helm of leading this center within the American Cancer Society and did an amazing job at funneling new and good ideas into real world products. My tip for other &#8220;intrapreneurs&#8221; is create the system for them to work in. Take what you learn from our book and create your own internal innovation center at your brand or nonprofit. It&#8217;s not hard. We promise. And we are here to help you!</p>
<p><strong>Nell: You&#8217;ve recently moved over to the for-profit world, helping companies to employ smart social media strategies. How did you decide to move to the private sector and how do you stay engaged with social change efforts?</strong></p>
<p><strong>David</strong>: Good question. I was recruited away from running my own consulting business by the amazing folks at Ant&#8217;s Eye View. And was offered a position and challenge that I couldn&#8217;t pass up being a sherpa for large companies in their own social and customer experience journeys. It was a no-brainer for me to come and work with some of the smartest people I&#8217;ve ever known in this space. I still keep my head in the game of social change by being the CEO of Lights. Camera. Help., which is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to encouraging other nonprofit and cause-driven organizations to use film and video to tell their stories. We do this through our education and volunteer match programs, screenings and an annual film festival.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.socialvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Pinterest-Facts-Infographi.jpg.png"><img class=" wp-image-5093 alignright" title="Pinterest-Facts-Infographi.jpg" src="http://www.socialvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Pinterest-Facts-Infographi.jpg-300x400.png" alt="" width="270" height="360" /></a>I am far from a social media expert, but I have grown to love some social media tools. <a href="http://www.twitter.com/nedgington" target="_blank">Twitter</a>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/socialvelocity" target="_blank">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/nelledgington" target="_blank">LinkedIn</a> have been my favorites, while I still haven&#8217;t seen the value of Google+ (although if someone wants to convince me, I&#8217;m all ears). But the newest social media darling, <a href="http://pinterest.com/nedgington/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> is fast becoming my favorite. And I think it holds an enormous opportunity for nonprofits.</p>
<p>Pinterest is a social media network based on images. If you find a recipe, a blog post, a pair of pants, a livingroom set, you can &#8220;pin&#8221; it to a board and share it with your followers. Similarly, if you see something someone else has &#8220;pinned&#8221; you can &#8220;repin&#8221; it to your board. Picture an enormous blank wall with individual bulletin boards organized by your interests.</p>
<p>For example, I currently have <a href="http://pinterest.com/nedgington/" target="_blank">12 &#8220;boards&#8221;</a>. Some are not work-related like &#8220;Home&#8221; and &#8220;Healthy Recipes.&#8221; But the rest are directly related to Social Velocity and my passion for social innovation and the nonprofit sector, like &#8220;Nonprofit/Social Change Books,&#8221; &#8220;Nonprofit Campaigns,&#8221; &#8220;Cool Infographics,&#8221; and &#8220;Nonprofit Media.&#8221; That last board is actually a shared board among 40+ people and organizations where we can all add to and edit the board.</p>
<p>There are several things about Pinterest that I love. For fun last Saturday night I spent a couple of hours there just scanning and pinning (sad, huh?).</p>
<p>There have been many articles about the potential of Pinterest for companies. People can pin images of particular products and encourage their friends and followers to purchase. What a boon to business!</p>
<p>But I think Pinterest is a particularly powerful opportunity for nonprofits for several reasons:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Nonprofits are naturally image-based.</strong> The every day work that nonprofits are involved in lends itself to compelling images: a child laughing while reading a good book, a hug from a case worker to their client, a new home, a beautiful piece of land conserved, an endangered animal. Include a compelling picture in every story you create about your nonprofit and pin it on Pinterest. You can also pin images from other places that relate to your passion and your mission.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Nonprofits easily connect to passion</strong>. I don&#8217;t care how much you love that new vacuum cleaner, you cannot be as passionate about it as you are about the child you are tutoring. People launch nonprofits or donate to nonprofits because an issue really hits them at the core. They may have had a loved one die of a terrible disease, or they may absolutely love border collies. What the social change sector has in spades is passion. Pinterest is a natural place to share that passion and convince others of its worth.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Female donors are <a href="http://www.thenonprofittimes.com/article/detail/female-donors-are-a-force-3764" target="_blank">a large and growing force</a>.</strong> If you want to attract more of this increasingly influential philanthropic force you better find them where they are, and right now that&#8217;s Pinterest. 68% of Pinterest users are female. And they spend a lot of time there. You want to be part of that.</li>
<p><BR></p>
<li><strong>Nonprofits are all about good story-telling</strong>. Pinterest is a natural place for storytelling. The Chronicle of Philanthropy has put together a great <a href="http://philanthropy.com/blogs/innovation/nonprofit-data-visualization-a-gallery/667" target="_blank">gallery of ways nonprofits tell their stories</a> through data visualizations. Although the gallery isn&#8217;t on Pinterest, all of these images should be and probably will be soon. Images tell such a better story than words, and nonprofits have so many great stories to tell. Use Pinterest to do it.</li>
</ul>

<p>Get out there and give Pinterest a try. I think you&#8217;ll like it.</p>
