Note: The last couple of years have been particularly trying for nonprofit leaders — those of you who are working tirelessly to build a better world. I know that it can sometimes seem that your work is a thankless, never-ending list of tasks, while you face increasing challenges from every corner. So I wanted to write you a letter. Because you inspire me every single day, and I want you to know that you are not alone in the daunting work you have chosen to undertake. So this letter is for you…
Dear Nonprofit Leaders,
I want more for you.
You have a passion for change burning inside you. You are driven, tirelessly driven, by a need to right a wrong. You have seen something that is fundamentally broken – an unequal playing field, crumbling institutions, forgotten people, crippled cities, a wounded planet – and you are possessed by a need to fix it.
How incredibly inspiring you are.
But sometimes you lose your way.
You begin to absorb the voices that have always told you that as a nonprofit leader you aren’t smart enough, savvy enough, or important enough. You become scared – of the enormity of the problems you are trying to solve, of running out of money, of losing the favor of your board and funders, of not being able to support your staff, of policies and institutions that have power over you, of changing times, of your own legacy, of bullies and overblown egos.
Your bold vision becomes instead a hamster wheel of just getting by. You lose your passion, your drive, you become beaten down by the seeming hopelessness of all of it.
Believe me I get it. This broken world that you are trying so desperately to fix can sometimes bring you to your knees. I have been there. Man, have I been there.
But the fact is that in giving into the fear you become powerless. You stand in your own way.
Fear is the great leveler and our fiercest adversary. It serves no purpose other than to keep you from your glory, and keep us from the gifts of change that you could otherwise offer the world.
We must overcome this fear.
We must seize the power that you hold inside of you — to find the right path; to convince others to join you; to speak with confidence and candor the truth that only you know; to step up instead of stepping back; to overcome all of the hurdles (you and others have placed) in your path.
You must believe me. You have everything you need inside of you to realize your big, bold change that the world so desperately needs. You just don’t know it.
I refuse to let you abandon your passion, your big vision for change. My purpose is to be at your side – with love, always with love – pushing you to break through the fear to the other side. To the other glorious side where the world becomes the vision you have held for so long in your heart.
Because the fact is, I need you — we ALL need you. You know how to make the world a better place. It is possible. I promise you that it is possible.
You just need to get out of your own way and lead us there.
