The most amazing thing happened for one of my clients the other day — she shifted her fear into $500,000.
I was in a session with one of my Strategic Advising clients (let’s call her Beth) who was anxious about an upcoming meeting with a long-time funder. It was time to approach this program officer about renewing for the coming year, but Beth was more nervous than usual. Recently this funder had started funding another organization with a similar mission. Beth worried that the foundation didn’t have enough money to fund both organizations, and that they might reduce, or stop, their investments in her organization.
That’s scarcity thinking, folks.
And the last place you want to be when you’re in the grips of scarcity thinking is a meeting with a funder. Because the number one thing that separates an unsuccessful funding pitch from a successful one is the mindset of the fundraiser.
I’m not kidding — a fundraiser who is steeped in scarcity thinking won’t raise much.
So I advised Beth to shift her mindset from scarcity to abundance by doing 3 critical thing right before her funder meeting:
- Think about all of the amazing things your organization has already accomplished
- Visualize your exciting plans for the future
- Do something inspiring — take a hike, get headphones on and dance, read something from Amanda Gorman, really whatever works for you
But, most importantly, I told Beth to fully embrace the truth:
She is offering her funder an incredible opportunity to invest in a rockstar solution to a problem they care deeply about.
To move from a scarcity to an abundance mindset, you simply have to fully embrace — in your bones — the beautiful social change warrior that you are.
Beth took my advice (I LOVE it when that happens!) and went into the meeting feeling confident, optimistic and excited to share this opportunity with her funder. He was blown away by her energy, excited about the possibilities, and agreed to invest $500,000, which is a 50% bump to last year’s investment.
Yep. I’m not joking about this stuff, folks.
The abundance mindset really works. If you deeply believe in the solutions you have to offer this broken world, shift your mindset — and money, people, everything you need, will follow.
For help making the move from scarcity to abundance, I have an exciting announcement later this month about a new offering. If you want to hear the announcement first, be sure to attend this month’s free training and/or sign up for our e-list where you’ll hear all the details! I’m so excited!!And, hey, if you’re curious whether a Strategic Advising engagement with me makes sense for you, apply for a free consultation.
