After nearly 20 years of work coalescing, supporting, and advocating for the network of state service commissions, America’s Service Commissions (ASC) was at an important inflection point as a membership association. Growing external interest in national service, coupled with changes to ASC's external funding landscape and an internal desire to grow the financial model and the reach of the organization, created a need for ASC to assess the current capacity of the organization and chart a more strategic future direction. ASC was poised to grow their membership, expand their national presence, grow their networks and influence, strengthen and diversify their funding sources, build their advocacy efforts and ultimately increase their impact on national service. But in order to get there, they needed to develop a comprehensive financial model that was fully aligned with their core competencies and their desired social impact. And then they needed to bring their board and member organizations together to chart a common strategic direction.
ASC hired Nell to conduct a Financial Model Assessment to determine how best to structure the organization’s strategy, programs, board, staff, revenue-generating activities, and marketing in preparation for future growth. Ultimately, Nell led ASC to develop a 3-year strategic plan. With Nell's guidance, ASC created an advisory group of staff, board, members and key external stakeholders. Nell led the group to analyze the external environment in which ASC operates, develop ASC's theory of change, articulate the audiences ASC wants to target, and determine the goals and objectives and corresponding financial projections for the next 3 years.
