There is an incredibly powerful tool in your possession, but I bet you rarely use it.
Your ability to imagine the world you want to see.
So often as social change leaders we focus on the problems we see in the world – the inequities, the injustice, the illness, the brokenness. The problems are big and complex, I get it.
But our true power as social change leaders actually comes from our ability to imagine the solutions.
To imagine the equitable, healthy, connected, functional, fair world you are working to create.
Humor me and try something for a minute.
Think about the problems your organization is trying to remedy. Think about their causes. Think about how insurmountable it sometimes feels. Revel in the dysfunction, the challenges, the hurdles.
Now, take a step back and examine how that makes you feel. Do you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, slightly depressed, defeated? I know I do. Ugh.
And now do something completely different. Think about the end result you are ultimately working toward.
Picture in your mind how the world will look when your efforts are completely successful. Imagine your clients fully thriving, witness lawmakers passing truly helpful policies, see the changes you desire spreading far and wide. Imagine how strong and healthy the part of the world you’ve helped change has become.
Did you get goosebumps? Boy, I did.
So, how do you feel?
Do you feel energized, inspired, excited, maybe even POWERFUL?
That’s because you are. You just empowered yourself through your own imagination.
When you use your own imagination as a tool, you instantly tap into your own internal power. It’s like you turn on a massive light switch.
And, mark my words – new ideas, energy, inspiration, connections will start to flow to you. Your imagination is a force to be reckoned with.
Give it a try the next time you are feeling worn down or frustrated. And then see what shifts for you.
